Ut-Lee Steals The Show As Phillies Take Game 1 In New York
“Phillies Take Commanding 1 Game Lead As Lee Shutsdown Yankees”
The Yankee Killer- Phillies ace Cliff Lee was unbelievable in his first ever World Series start. Lee pitched a complete game allowing just 1 run on 6 hits while walking no one and striking out 10. The Phillies couldn’t be more happier as their ace got the better of Yankee ace CC Sabathia. The Phillies will now have home field advantage for the remainder of the 2009 World Series.
Delivering The Major Blow- Phillies second baseman Chase Utley launched 2 solo homeruns to give the Phillies a 1-0 series lead. The two solo shots by Utley was all the Phillies would need as Cliff Lee once again dominated the opposition by allowing 1 run in 9 innings. Utley may have set a major league record for reaching base in his 26th staight postseason game but it was his two homeruns that proved to be the big difference in tonight’s epic game 1 matchup.
GAME 1 RECAP - Cliff Lee Silences Yankees With A Complete Game Effort To Give Phillies 1-0 Series Lead
“Lee And Utley Carry Phillies To 1-0 Series Lead”
Phillies second baseman Chase Utley set a major league record for reaching base in his 26th straight postseason game. Utley wasn’t done there as he hit two solo homeruns of Yankee ace CC Sabathia to give the Phillies a commanding 1 game lead in the 2009 World Series. In both at bats Utley had two strikes on him but his ability to crowd the plate against left handed pitchers paid off as he hit two lasers over the short right field porch in Yankee Stadium. In what many believed to be the game of the series both CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee went toe to toe in a great pitchers duel. The problem for the Yankees was that all night long they couldn’t figure out how to muster something against Cliff Lee. Lee was magnificent once again as he allowed just 6 hits in his complete game effort striking out 10. The most important stat of Lee’s night was that he didn’t walk one Yankee hitter. Lee has now pitched 33 1/3 innings in this year’s postseason allowing just 2 earned runs. Lee went the distance tonight allowing just 1 earned run which makes his ridiculous postseason ERA .74. More importantly he gave the Phillies home field advantage for the remainder of the World Series. This was the Yankees first loss at home in the 2009 playoffs and to be honest it couldn’t have come at a worse time. Both Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada each struck out twice. Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez went back to his old playoff for as he racked up a hat trick in striking out 3 times. It looks as though Arod will remain in the doghouse as he continues to struggle in the biggest moments of his career. Teixeira and Arod were a combined 0-8 for 5 strikeouts. Together the Yankees big bats (Tex, Arod, Posada) were a combined 1-12. In order for the Yankees to come back in this series both Arod and Tex have to hit as the Yankees are a team that appears to be lost without them. All the Phillies needed to do was take 1 game in New York and they got it done on their first attempt as the Yankees now face a must win situation tomorrow night in game 2.
GAME 2 PREVIEW- Pedro Martinez will oppose AJ Burnett in Game 2 tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium. Pedro Martinez is no stranger to Yankee Stadium as he has a career record of 12-13 with a 3.41 ERA in 38 starts against the Yankees. Pedro is known for tossing former Yankee bench coach Don Zimmer to the ground in the 2003 ALCS when a bench clearing brawl broke out at Fenway Park. When Martinez was pitching for the Red Sox he was inclined to say such comments as “Wake up the Bambino and I’ll drill him in the ass” and also who could forget the 2004 ALCS when Martinez told the baseball world that the “Yankees are his daddy”. This had a sold out crowd at Yankee Stadium chanting “Who’s Your Daddy?” all night long during his Game 2 start of that series. Look by the Phillies taking game 1 they are basically playing with the houses money tomorrow night as the Yankees find themselves in a must win situation for the first time this postseason. Game 2 features AJ Burnett against Pedro Martinez with the first pitch at 7:57 PM.
